It is funny how mortals always picture us as putting things into their minds: in reality our best work is done by keeping things out.

Teach them to estimate the value of each prayer by their success in producing a desired feeling.

The humans do not start from that direct perception of Him which we, unhappily, cannot avoid. They have never known that ghastly luminosity, that stabbing and searing glare which makes the background of permanent pain to our lives.

I've tried to get a jump on our upcoming evening study, and am amazed at C.S. Lewis' insights in his work The Screwtape Letters. I couldn't catch all of the good stuff to post, but this one I couldn't overlook.

At one point Screwtape, the demon who is mentoring his young protege tempter, says

If a person cannot be cured of church going, the next best thing is to send him all over the neighborhood so that he becomes a taster, or connoisseur, of churches.
