Our Feeble Works & God's Sovereign Power

Ever think that your attempts at gospelizing have come up short? Just remember this...

One wintry Sabbath day a young man wondered through the streets. Seeking a dry and warm place, he turned him into a little church. The pastor that day was not able to make it to the service due to the snow, so a layman had taken it upon himself to bring God's Word that morning.

Not having anything prepared, the man of low respects opened to the book of Isaiah and read, "Look unto me and be ye saved all the ends of the earth." Then he read it again. And again, and again and again (you get the picture). Each time he read the verse he stressed a different word. One time he said, "LOOK unto me and be ye saved..." Another time it was "Look unto ME and be ye saved..." And then, "Look unto me and be ye SAVED..."

With these readings the man intermixed calls to the congregation to look to Christ for salvation. One of these exhortations was directly to the boy who had stumbled in out of the weather. Fixing his eyes on the youngster the man said, "Young man, you look very miserable and you will be miserable--miserable in life, and miserable in death--if you don't obey my text." Then, lifting up his hands he shouted, "Young man, look to Jesus Christ. Look! Look! Look!"

That morning the young fellow walked away a converted man. He later became one of history's greatest preachers. His name was CH Spurgeon.

The Prophet Isaiah also says,
As the rain and the snow come down from heaven and ...water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose. Isaiah 55:10-11 (ESV)
