More Prayer Picks from Hodge

Loved these quotes, again from Charles Hodge's Systematic Theology:

"It is probably true that there are more good preachers than good prayers. The main reason for this is, that the minister devotes a great part of the labour of the week to the preparation of his sermon, and not a thought to his prayers."

And this too...

"The public services of the sanctuary are designed for worship and instruction. The former includes prayer and singing; the latter, the reading the word of God and preaching. These elements should be preserved in due proportion."

and don't forget this...

"Prayer...is one of those means which God has ordained for the end of communicating the life-giving and sanctifying influences of the Spirit to the souls of men...When the soul draws near to God, God draws near to it, manifests his glory, sheds abroad his love, and imparts that peace which passes all understanding."

And lastly, on the power of prayer, Hodge says,

"The Supreme Power is roused into action by prayer."

and,
"Queen Mary of Scotland was not beside herself when she said she feared the prayers of John Knox, more than an army."

Beautiful!
