Christians have always been extreme.

In some places in the early centuries Christians would not patronize hospitals. They would often choose to suffer at home because at the hospital, along with their medical treatment, the in house shaman would come and perform an incantation over them. The result was that many choose to die rather than participate in (or tolerate) their idolotrous worship.
