Onomatopoeia Culture

I am finding that more and more our culture is shifting to onomatopoeia as a legitimate means of regular communication. For instance, the sound bites or slogans we see and hear from those who are running for civil offices are typically just a few unconnected words strewn together. Churches too are involved in this disintegration of meaningful thought. For instance, this was found on a church's web page to describe their worship:

"Worship. Prayer. Music. Community. Life. Change. Draw Close. Open Up."

The line was followed by a paragraph of explanation. But the line was obviously intended to be descriptive of the church's services. Yet one does not get a sense for what is involved in the meeting times. What does "life" or "change" look like. Is one expected to "open up" like one does at an AA meeting?

I am all for bullet points and pithy statements. But words need to be attached to other related words to convey real meaning. Words need context if they are going to communicate real thoughts and ideas.

But maybe that's it. Perhaps we don't want to communicate such things!
