Ashland business Archway Cookies recently closed its doors on its employees. The closing came without notice and the employees were basically left standing on the doorstep wondering what happened to their job--and what will come next.
This is the sort of social injustice that Christians need to be confronting. This is what Larger Catechism 130 refers to as "careless exposing them to danger." The fifth command requires superiors to care for their subordinates as a father would his child, yet this act of the company is equivalent to a father outright abandoning his children.
While the closing may have been inevitable, righteousness requires that the employees be informed of the company's troubles and the possibility of lay offs/closing. Moreover duty requires that those workers be given some sort of severance so that they can make due in the meantime.
I'm not sure legal action is the best route to pursue on behalf of the workers, though legally they have a case. What is more sure is that the citizens of Ashland (especially Christians) are called upon to assist these as they seek to find new work.
Any workers may certainly feel free to contact me if they have any needs (email or 419-289-2552). I will be most willing to provide some sort of temporary relief in so far as I can.
