Doctrine on Fire: R.A. Torry develops "A Startling Question"

The conversation typically goes like this:

Person A:  What's the difference between teaching and preaching?
Person B:  If you don't know, then you've never heard good preaching.

Most today haven't heard good preaching.  Not the kind that would be characterized as "doctrine on fire" anyway.  However, you can get a taste of such preaching in R.A. Torry's sermon, "A Startling Question for Every Man Who is Not a Christian."  His captivating message develops Hebrews 2:3, "How shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation."

Much of preaching today is in a chat-type style---I am your buddy, can we talk style. Preaching used to be authoritative, with the preacher bringing forth the thunder of God in the law and the quiet soft voice of grace. Today it is often a mushy, lets all feel good about ourselves and let me give you some tips kind of sermon. It is a helping, man-centered style first, not an authoritative, self loathing & convicting God centered style. Worldly philosophy dictates the means today.
