I've been looking for some good gospel tracts because I'm convicted that I need to be distributing gospel literature.
Gospel tracts, since their inception, have always been greatly used of the Lord. For instance, tract publication and distribution was a significant part of George Muller's work with the Scripture Knowledge Institute in England.
Tracts have always interested me. As a matter of fact, I collect them. You might object, saying I should pass them on, but most are not worth re-distributing.
Most of the tracts I've seen are just down-right goofy. They try to be tricky or clever. But deception and gimmicks are out of place when it comes to telling the truth of Christ. Others use cartoons, as if Walt Disney was ever a good evangelist. Moreover, that is too silly a medium to communicate the sobering truths of life and death.
I think that tracts ought to be a lot like Christianity: plain, simple, and straight to the point. It should just be a miniature sermon (for faith cometh by hearing the word of God), but yet pleasing to the eye (The best that I have found have been at Crossway books).
You can get too jumbled, and the words can overwhelm. And some can be simply offensive to look at. So it is not that easy a thing to do.
I have thought about beginning to print, my own tracts. I for get the name, but one theologian long ago said that the test of a good evangelist is whether or not he can write a good tract. But printing tracts is a costly and skilled venture. The main pro would be that the tract has your name & church on it, so a person who responds positively could track you down.
Muller started his Scripture Knowledge institute without a single penny. It was based simply on a prayer and a goal.
If reformation, renewal, and revival are going to come about in our day, then the printing and distribution of of quality (& free) Christian education materials should be a priority.
