Required reading (or listening). This work by Jonathan Edwards, recounting the events surrounding the First Great Awakening, is splendid. I'm half way through it, and boy it has been a wonderful refreshment. It is amazing to see how God's Spirit came so powerfully.
It starts out with a very brief sketch of what life was like just before the awakening. Edwards uses the word "night walkers." We would think of a prostitute, but he meant that people were just out late at night roaming around, perhaps with drink or just indulging in activities that were all round not good. It makes me think of all the teens looking for a place to hang out or the adults at the local taverns. How we need a surprising work of God in our day.
One of the things that Edwards does admit though is that this was extraordinary. He says that the Lord worked in a faster and a much more visible way. Indeed, usually kingdom growth is like a growing seed: quite unnoticable.
