The Peril of the PCUSA

The mass exodus from the PCUSA continues, even being described as "tsunami"- like proportions. The pews are emptying at such a significant rate the high up elites have now realized that something needs to be done. Sadly, they think that the solution is a change in polity.

That just goes to show that they still don't get it. No matter how poor I believe their polity is (it having become more Episcopalian than Presbyterian), a tweak of the church order is not the answer to their problems. That is like trying to fix the plumbing on a sinking ocean liner.

The problem, if they would like some advice, is their theology. When you teach people that God (if he exists) doesn't care what you do and will not hold you accountable for your actions, why should people listen? (Just so you don't think I'm making this up, check out these articles on the PCUSA web cite: Hell [it does not exist], Universalism [the belief that everyone is going to be saved in the end]).

The truth is, when you understand that God, by his sovereign grace, has chosen for himself a particular people and redeemed those (and not others) from the ravages of his infinite wrath, you will be more likely to worship Him each Lord's day and seek to obey what He says through his word and his appointed ministers. If such truths were preached from the pulpits of the PCUSA, they would not be seeing the pews looking so barren.

But as it stands the exodus continues. And that is, perhaps, an indication that the Lord God of Heaven has left too.
