"Above My Pay Grade": Humanistic Honesty

"Whether you’re looking at it from a theological perspective or a scientific perspective, answering that question with specificity … is above my pay grade"--Sen. Barak Obama

While many conservatives and Christians alike are criticizing Sen. Obama for his answer to Rick Warren's query as to when life begins, I would like to commend him for his honesty.

Don't get me wrong--and do not take me out of context--I by no means endorse or back his statement. I truly believe that life begins at conception. But I believe that because I have the authoritative backing of God's Word to do so.

Because of his secular, humanistic worldview Sen. Obama does not have such a place to ground his understanding when it comes to the beginning of life.

When he says that such an answer is "above his pay grade" he is, for the most part, right. Science can say what happens to the child and can show us overwhelming indications of life (e.g. heartbeat, fingers and toes, brain activity, DNA, etc.). But science cannot determine with absolute certainty when life actually begins. The only one who can answer such a profound question is God. God, as the Author of Life, determines the beginning and end of life. Being that he has no regard for what God says in Holy Scripture, Sen. Obama cannot handle such a theologically loaded question.

So while others may criticize Sen. Obama for such an absurd statement, I commend him for being refreshingly honest with regard to his foundational principles. Sen. Obama should be commended because he helps us all to see the failure of humanistic thinking.

So thank you, Sen. Obama for showing us that man cannot know himself without God. I agree wholeheartedly, without the guidance of God's Word we loose all orientation as to life's beginning, meaning, value and purpose. Or to put it in God's own words, "In Him we live and move and have our being."

And may we begin to turn to the Bible for the answers that are above our pay grade.

"You knitted me together in my mother's womb...
My frame was not hidden from you when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth
."
Psalm 139:13, 15
