It is funny that these two articles (Commissioners Balance Budget and Relay for Life) should appear on the front page of the exact same paper. One showing how socialistic programs continue to grab for more (and yet fail miserably) and how the power of individual creativity and charity continues to thrive and help to sustain lives.
The county commissioners admit that they cannot continue to support the growing need of the children's services department. It would seem most logical then to allow individuals and churches to take the reigns of it. Instead of dumping loads of money into counselors and social workers, pastors could actually minister to souls. Children who are unruly could be advised that they do not honor their parents they will have their eyes pecked out (Prov. 30:17). Those children who have been abused or neglected could find a refuge in the loving arms of the church. Parents could also be taught proper parenting skills, if need be.
The longer term would prove more beneficial too as the gospel comes to rest in those who come under the wing of the church. The hearts of children would turn to their fathers and the fathers' to their children (Malachi 4:6). The overall morality of society would improve too as people see themselves as accountable to the true and living God rather than just another man in a suit.
We could have a better society. We would only need to embrace the symbiotic relationship that should exist between the civil magistrate (executing justice) and church (nurturing and edifying). But we'll probably not see this. That's because we like to relegate the church into obscurity and think that the government is our savior.
But socialist band aids, while perhaps having a temporary fix, will not prove profitable in the long run. That's because the real problem (i.e. people's hearts) will never be corrected without the intervention of the church and her gospel.
