Congressman John Boccieri stopped in town to give the people of Ashland the opportunity to voice any items that might be on their minds. One conversation I listened in on had to do with the bailouts of the big 3 auto dealers.
Boccieri mentioned that the bailout was necessary for the interests of national security. Should they go under, so goes the reasoning, no one will be able to make our defense machinery. But as this article states, this is a false premise because much of the work is done in Toyota and Honda factories.
But let's just say that the big three are involved (and I believe that they most probably are in at least some ways). Suppose also that we let them tank. America is defenseless, right? Of course not. Even if they didn't go through bankruptcy and reorganize, there are still quality options.
First, another company, such as Honda, Toyota or a new entrepreneur, could offer to buy the portion(s) of the company to continue manufacturing the items.
But even if this shouldn't work, we have another avenue of hope. It should be obvious that those working in the big 3 corporations still want to make money. As recent news has shown, they like getting bonuses and ever-increasing sums of income. I'm sure at least one of those bright fellows would probably see the ever promising need in the market and fill it. Investing his own money, receiving loaned finances, and getting a hefty start up tax break from Uncle Sam could easily lay the ground work for the production of the necessary military goods.
The real nut of the matter is not about national security. It is, as has been pointed out widely in conservative outlets, about political power security. With the Big 3 stabilized, a good portion of the Democrat base is stabilized (i.e. the unions). Also, as recent news has again shown, more government control can be laid upon the companies.
