The Glory Has Departed

1 Sam. 4 recounts how the Israelites, because of their grandiose apostasy, lost their precious ark to the Philistines. This was the time when "the word of God was rare" and the sons of Eli, just before they were slain in battle, were indulging their carnal delights at the expense of the covenant people. Eli's daughter-in-law gave birth to a child just before she died. With all the events transpiring as they did, the child received a fitting name, "Ichabod," which means "the glory has departed."

This post over at Then They May Know says exactly what I have been thinking regarding the events that have transpired in the New England states as of late. The glory has departed!

Here is a snippet:
To the people of New England:

How far you have fallen from your glorious past! The Pilgrims came here for the glory of God and the advancement of the Christian faith. The original thirteen colonies united in a dependence upon the God of the Bible and in opposition against the greatest military power of their day. They chose freedom over tyranny, principle over slavery, and God over sin. Now, New England is fast becoming a community of immorality.

The citizens of New England were once to be admired and envied. Now, the majority of its people are to be held up as examples of what can happen when one loses all sense of right and wrong. No longer do you depend upon or seek God. No longer do you care about right and wrong. No longer do you love wisdom and morality.

Where once you gave to this nation John Adams, John Hancock, Noah Webster, Jonathan Edwards and David Brainerd, now you hold up as your best examples men (if that is a title they can rightly claim) such as Christopher Dodd, Joseph Biden, Barney Frank, Edward Kennedy, John Kerry, and Patrick Leahy.

That was a much-needed truth, Matt. I really enjoy your blogs, and also the Then They Will Know blog you quoted. Well done. May America (including Ashland) return to the God of the Bible!
