The Phoenix was a mythological bird of ancient times. It was believed that this bird would build a nest and light it and itself on fire when it became elderly. From the ashes it was thought to arise again with youth and vigor.
The early Christians took this mythological creature and applied it to Christ. The Phoenix became a symbol of Christ's victory over the grave.
