So Much Sin

Gracious God,

Life is a gift from you. Every breath is a demonstration of your mercy. For so much of our lives are consumed with sin. We fall so quickly into error. Our transgressions seem never to cease. But even when our deeds ebb to a slower pace of sin, our mouths still pour forth a multitude of offenses. And in those infrequent moments when the insults of our lips are diminished, our thoughts continue to be saturated with shameful contemplations.

We know that you are holy and that the wages of sin is death. But we also know that the gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ. So we come to you; asking for the life that there is in him. We pray that his wounds would be our restoration and that his blood would be the balm that covers over our sins.

And Lord, we pray that the healing work of the Holy Spirit would have its full work. We pray that He would mortify our flesh and stem the eternal tide of our carnality. We admit before you that the term “saints” is a most unworthy title for us. It is our desire to live up to that label you have given us. But it is not within our power. So we ask that you would move within our hearts and tear out the weeds of corruption. Fashion us after the model of Christ and conform our inward being to your holy law.

For we ask this in the strong name of Jesus. Amen.
